Running free

Evans 7’s player Abby Murray makes a run with the ball off a scrum against Regina Campbell, May 22.

The Evans 7's Swift Current U18 rugby team traveled to Regina on Wednesday, May 22, for their fourth set of league games for the season. They played a total of three games and came out with one victory and two losses.

Their win was against Regina Campbell with a score of 32-15. Tries were made by Allison Wall, Abby Murray, Anna Voysey, and Gabrielle Schmidt. Their first loss came up against Regina's Leboldus Suns 1 with a score of 12-30. Tries were made by Wall. They ended their day with a loss against Notre Dame with a score of 0-50.

The Evans 7's traveled to Regina again on Monday, May 27, for their fifth and final set of games. With it being finals they played three games in their pool and faced Notre Dame for two of them.

They played strongly as a team and came together when it mattered most, as much as the scores do not always reflect that. They came up short in their first game against Regina's Leboldus Suns with a score of 12-39. Tries were made by Wall and Voysey. They then played their first Notre Dame game and held ground, but were just short with a final score of 24-32. Tries were made by Wall, Voysey, and Jayne Hanson. Then their second game versus Notre Dame ended in a loss of 12-27. Tries were made by Hanson and Gabrielle Schmidt.

The Evans 7's team ended the season strong and in a way we could not have imagined. The final scores did not show justice as to how hard the girls played on Monday. They showed so much of what they have learned throughout the season on the field.

It is so rewarding as coaches to watch the girls continually grow and start to become a team. Even with limited players and subs, the girls always gave it their all, especially when we needed it most. It is such a special feeling to be thinking one thing on the sideline and then to watch your player execute the exact same play you were thinking. That is when you truly know that they fully understand the game of rugby, and nothing is more exciting.

One thing we really need to work on for next year is getting our numbers up and growing rugby in Swift Current. We would love to be able to have some home games next year along with a home tournament to show Swift Current the exciting world of rugby and what it is all about. We are also thinking of doing a fall season of Evans 7's rugby along with our normal spring season next year in 2020.
