The Rothney Observatory located just outside of Priddis on the Cowboy Trail invites the public to this one-time, special event of the 50th Anniversary landing of the Apollo 11 ship that took place on July 20th, 1969.
One of the greatest endeavors of science and engineering attempted during the twentieth century was this lunar landing. Speakers will present talks on the space race, the Apollo 11 mission, pop culture and the space race as well as the future of Canadian lunar explorations. CBC’s Starman, Don Hladiuk and Space Historian, Joel Powell will present “Apollo 11: A Celebration 50 Years in the Making”.
Both Joel & Don watched the flight of Apollo 11 on television in July 1969 (from different cities), and never lost their enthusiasm for space exploration. For the past 35 years Don has reported on space science news on CBC radio and Joel has been writing about space history while patiently waiting for humanity’s return to the moon and voyage to the planet Mars.
Celebrate one of humanity’s greatest achievements as we look back and look forward in our exploration of our celestial neighbor, the moon. Family fun activities include moon music by Karaoke by Europroductions, Calgary Rocketry Club rockets, solar observing with the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada – Calgary Centre, lunar science fiction Tyche Books and much more! Food trucks will be onsite and the RAO giftshop open offering cool 50th anniversary gifts and merchandise. Gates open at 11:30am - Program begins at 12 p.m. until 3 p.m. Limited tickets available at https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/50th-anniversary-of-lunar-landing-tickets-62743571712 for entry @$10/person.
