Lethbridge’s Galt Museum will be offering a Blackfoot Language Class on from Sept. 20-Nov.22.

“The Blackfoot Language Classes are an introductory class to the Blackfoot language,” says Graham Ruttan, the Marketing and Communications Officer for the Galt Museum.
“It is designed to help learners speak introductory level Blackfoot. It will be fun to learn some simple Blackfoot sentences and words. Language is an important part of culture.”
Taught by Julius Delaney, the classes will be every Thursday evening on the aforementioned dates from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Ruttan encourages participants to attend all 10 sessions because they will build upon each other.
“Our instructor comes highly recommended. Julius Delaney helped develop Blackfoot Language curricula for the Kanai Board of Education,” Ruttan says. “This is the first time the Galt has hosted a Blackfoot Language course.”
Ruttan notess that although registration is not required for these classes, the cost for each class is the admittance fee to the museum; annual pass holders are able to participate for free.
Ruttan adds that the class is best suited for adult and senior students.
Ruttan says the Galt Museum and Archives have hosted many indigenous exhibits and programs over the years and their Blackfoot history and culture programs have been particularly popular over the past year.
“As a public historical institution, we are committed to equity in presenting the history and culture of our region for the public.” Ruttan said.
“We are also committed to addressing the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and to help preserve and keep alive the culture and traditions of the Blackfoot people. Many experts and Elders have noted that language preservation is essential to cultural heritage preservation. ”
