Markets generally slower to end the year

Please find attached the latest cattle market report. Highlights for the week ending December 11, 2020 include:

·         Feeder steer prices were primarily lower across the weight categories this week. The only price increase occurred in the 400-500lb weight category, increasing $4.35 per cwt to end the week at an average price of $248.75 per cwt. The largest decrease was seen in the 900+lb weight category, decreasing by $8.70 per cwt to end the week at an average price of $161.70 per cwt. The 700-800lb weight category ended the week with an average price of $182.33 per cwt while the 800-900lb weight category ended the week at an average price of $174.21 per cwt. The weekly average steer price, across the reported weight categories, was $206.05 per cwt in Saskatchewan.

·         Saskatchewan feeder heifer prices were mixed across the reported weight categories this week. The largest increase was seen in the 300-400lb weight category, increasing $2.23 per cwt. The largest decrease was seen in the 400-500 lb. weight category, decreasing $2.06 per cwt, to end the week at an average price of $202.25 per cwt. The 500-600lb weight category increased $0.20 per cwt to end the week at an average price of $186.50 per cwt, while the 700-800lb category saw a decrease of $0.80 per cwt to end the week at an average price of $163.50. The weekly average heifer price across the reported weight categories was $183.82 per cwt in Saskatchewan.

·         Live cattle futures prices were mixed this week as well with the December contract decreasing by US$0.125 per cwt relative to last week to settle at US$108.750 per cwt on Friday. The February contract increased $0.850 per cwt compared to the previous week to settle at US$113.250 per cwt.

·         Choice beef cutout prices (600-900 lb.) for the week averaged US$220.51 per cwt, down US$19.93 per cwt from US$240.44 per cwt the previous week, a decrease of 8.3 per cent. The Choice beef cutout is 0.6 per cent higher than the same week a year ago when it was valued at $219.14 per cwt.
