Contributed Shaunavon Hayley Wickenheiser is coming home to Shaunavon to celebrate her "Olympic Gold Medal Hat Trick". April 30 will be an exciting day for the community and surrounding area as everyone is invited to come celebrate Four times Olympic Medalist, Hayley Wickenheiser is regarded as one of the best female hockey players in the world. She won a silver medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan and gold medals in 2002 in Salt Lake City, Utah; 2006 in Turin, Italy and 2010 in Vancouver. Although her visit will be short the Committee planning the event is looking to make it as sweet as possible for the community. Wickenheiser will be doing a presentation to all school students in the afternoon, then a quick stop at the Shaunavon Care Centre and off to a public community event at the Shaunavon Rink Complex. Hayley’s Golden Hat Trick Celebration will kick off with a beef on a bun supper. A special program and an address by Hayley will follow at 7:30 p.m. Alex McFadyen will be on-site with his world renowned hockey book, as well as raffles, silent auction, and 50-50. Everything gets underway at the Rink at 5 p.m. The organizing committee, chaired by Laurie Cowan, is so pleased that Hayley was able to fit a visit to Shaunavon into what remains an extremely busy schedule even though the Olympics are over. The event will give the community a chance to congratulate Hayley in her accomplishments and raise funds for the Wickenheiser Centre. The Centre, which is going into its final phase of construction this spring, has been named after Hayley and will house Shaunavon’s new four-sheet Curling Rink, Skating Arena and amenities.
