Another busy week of sports action in the Chinook School Division.

Congratulations to the Abbey Senior girls curling team who won the bronze medal at provincial curling on March 4-6 in Glentworth.

The girls’ team is composed of skip Amy Halvorson, third Shelby Walker, second Kayla Marlin, lead Kelsey Scherger and coach Kevin Marlin.

After losing their first two games, the girls put together four victories in a row to advance to the championship round as a C-event qualifier.

The girls then lost a close 7-5 game to Kelliher in the semi, but rebounded in the bronze final. Abbey posted a 10-3 win over Saskatoon Holy Cross to capture the bronze medal.

The Abbey boys’ team (in Assiniboia) and Swift Current Comp mixed team (in Watrous) were also at provincials and experienced some success. Both teams had records of two wins and three losses. Congrats to all teams on representing Chinook at provincials.

On Tuesday, March 2 the junior basketball championships were held with Swift Current Comp hosting. In the girls’ final, Herbert Laurels posted an exciting 50-44 victory over the hometown Grade 9 Ardens to win the title.

The game was close throughout with the teams rarely more than four points apart. Herbert stretched the lead to six points near the end of the game with some timely steals.
