Swift Current This past Friday was a night to honour Swift Current's Five Most Fascinating People and what a night it was at the Lyric Theatre. Between family and friends of the five honourees and supporters of the Lyric, the theatre was filled for a night of entertainment.
The Five Most Fascinating People is a joint project between media partners Prairie Post and Southwest TV News. Three years ago the yearly project was created to bring forth accolades to five individuals who genuinely make the community a better place. Along with title sponsor Swift Current Mall and supporting partners, Mooseworld Inc. and the Lyric Theatre, the annual project was expanded to include the Lyric Showcase Event.
Building on the success of the Lyric's Premiere Showcase Event this past summer was a natural fit for the Five Most Fascinating People project.
“After the first two years of the project we were looking to really ramp it up and hold an event that was different, entertaining and a lot of fun. But at the same time allow us to properly recognize and honour the five people as they deserve.” said George Tsougrianis, General Manager of Southwest TV News. “Partnering with the Lyric Showcase and having the lively local entertainers far exceeded our expectations.”
“The evening was a huge success. The standing ovation for the five individuals was amazing and is proof that the efforts put forth are appreciated by the community. As well with all proceeds from sales going directly to the Lyric's capital fund raising efforts, we're proud to be a part of an event that benefits the local arts community this way,” added Doug Evjen, General Manager of Prairie Post.
The evening began with a sampling of gourmet appetizers and drink pairings before Jackie Hudec Clifton took to the stage with her style of country and blues.
Following her performance the stage belonged to Swift Current's Five Most Fascinating People. First up was Anika Henderson who discovered her passion in life half way around the world. Never imagining she'd have the opportunity to do something she loves in her hometown. She takes great pride in assisting those who are new to the region and provides an invaluable service to the community.
Second, Ron Heeg who through hard work and dedication to health care and his
community has touched the lives of many over the years. In 45 years he
has grown an extremely successful business but its the time and effort
he unselfishly gives to organizations that makes the region a better
place to live.
Third, Paul Rezansoff's passion for sculpture and art at a young age was redirected when he became involved in the organization of arts activities. That direction became a life long calling to enhancing the arts community in the southwest. A champion of the arts, Paul has been instrumental in the establishment of the Art Gallery and more recently the Sky Centre.
Fourth, after Trent McCleary's hockey career was cut short he returned to his hometown to begin a new chapter in his life. It's hockey in general, that allowed Trent to form the McCleary Marleau Moen Foundation which is dedicated to ensuring every child is given the opportunity to do what they love most.
Last but not least, Alanna Howell's deep appreciation for nature and her environment results in her dedicating a large portion of her time and energy into ensuring the planet is well-preserved for the future. Today her home life revolves around taking care of the land around her but her passion for the environment will affect e world as a whole tomorrow.
While on stage each of the five individuals were presented with a commemorative framed print of their story and a DVD of their video. At this time the crowd of over 100 family and friends saluted the five with a standing ovation.
After a toast from his worship Mayor Jerrod Schafer it was back to showcasing some of the southwest's finest musicians. David and Isaac Carter played a mixture of folk and classic rock, arranging well known songs for two guitars and voice.
Paula McGuigan collaborated with Vancouver Island musician, Cheryl Fischer. Their music was a blend of the west coast and the prairie roots that they hail from.
Doug Sawatsky then entertained the crowd with his old school blues harp, street corner style, called Blues Shout. His humourous lyrics had the audience laughing and clapping along to the end of his performance.
Mark Penner with Donovan Epp rounded out the scheduled showcase. Penner's music is influenced by the blues, rock, folk and country.
As a celebrate finale for the evening, the performers then took to stage for a jam session which brought the audience to their feet and insisting on an encore performance.
In all it was a night of fascinating food and entertainment to honour Swift Current's Five Most Fascinating People.
