Brooks RCMP have been kept busy with a variety of incidents in July:

Robbery

At around 11:20 p.m. July 26, Brooks RCMP responded to a panic alarm at the Heritage Inn and Suites in Brooks. Upon arrival, members were advised by the female desk clerk a man had entered the hotel lobby, approached her from behind, placed an unknown object up to her back, and made a threat towards her. The clerk subsequently allowed the male access to the cash drawer where he grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene.

A short time later, at approximately 12:45 a.m., Brooks RCMP received a second call of a robbery at the downtown 7-11 on 2nd Street West. The staff at the 7-11 stated a lone male, whose description matched that of the Heritage Inn robbery suspect, entered the business, once again threatened violence toward the female cashier, then fled with an undisclosed amount of money.

A few minutes following the call to 7-11, Brooks RCMP located and arrested one male suspect, in a vehicle on 2nd Street East. The male was taken into custody without incident.

After further investigation, Brooks RCMP have charged 26-year-old Justin Tyrone Whynott, of Bashaw, Alta. with the following: Robbery With Violence (two counts); Uttering a Death Threat; Failing to Comply With a Probation Order and Impaired Care and Control of a Motor Vehicle.

Whynott is in custody and was scheduled to appear in Brooks Provincial Court July 28.

Herb not for human consumption

It has been brought to the attention of the Brooks RCMP a local business is selling a product entitled Happy Shaman Herbs. 

On July 20, a young female attended the Brooks RCMP detachment to report she and friends had purchased a small amount of Happy Shaman Herbs and smoked the product based on the instruction of the business employee. The young female had an adverse reaction to the product, was treated at the Brooks Hospital and released.   

Brooks RCMP attended the business and spoke with the employee who stated the product was like a “legal drug” that will make you feel woozy.  Further investigation into the product revealed the product is labeled “Not for Human Consumption.” No ingredient list is provided on the package or available at the business. The package states Happy Shaman Herbs is a combination of rare plants, herbal extracts and botanical concentrates.   

Happy Shaman Herbs is a natural herbal incense and the product is not meant to be smoked, chewed or ingested into the body. 

The Brooks RCMP would like to remind the public this product is not regulated by the Food and Drug Act and the actual contents contained within are unknown. The directions for use need to be read and understood for all products. Any questions or concerns about a product, food or drug should be directed to a trained health-care professional.

Theft of Gas

The Brooks RCMP are currently investigating a Theft of gas that occurred during the early morning hours of July 12, 2010, in the back alley of 116A Greenbrook Drive in Brooks.   The owner of a GMC Blazer returned home to find a green garden hose in his gas tank with a large gas spill on the ground.

It is unknown exactly how much fuel was siphoned from the tank.

Stolen golf clubs

Brooks RCMP are currently investigating the theft of golf clubs which took place sometime between 8 p.m. July 10, and 10 a.m. July 11.

During that time, unknown persons entered the Rolling Hills Golf Course and stole three sets of clubs out of the truck boxes of a silver Dodge truck and a red Ford truck. The makes of the three sets of clubs are; Wilson Pro Staff, Ping and Cleveland.

Theft from a Motor Vehicle-

The Brooks RCMP are requesting the public's assistance with the following investigation:

Sometime between the evening of July 27  and the morning of July 28, unknown suspect(s) entered an unlocked truck in the 600 block of the Industrial Road area of Brooks. Once inside the vehicle, the suspect(s) stole a GPS unit as well as other personal items.  

Assault with Weapon

On Thursday July 8, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Police were called to Young Road near the Centennial Arena in Brooks, Alberta after a male was struck in the left hand with a crow bar.

The victim and the two suspects, who were unknown to him, were involved in a verbal altercation on the side of the road when one of the male suspects hit the victim in the hand with a crow bar. The two males then fled the area in a late model, maroon, Ford F-150.

The first male suspect is described as; Caucasian, in his 20's with longer brown hair, medium build, average height wearing a red baseball cap.

The second male suspect is described as; Caucasian, medium build, average height, blonde hair.

Hit and Run

Brooks RCMP are investigating a vehicle hit and run that occurred in a parking lot at 333 2nd Street West in Brooks between 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on April 5. 

During that time, a white Volkswagen was struck by an unknown vehicle causing minimal damage. The approximate value of damage is currently unknown.
