Football and volleyball take the center stage

The Southwest hosted two provincial quarter final football games on Halloween.

In 1A six-man action in Gull Lake, the Lions hosted Hanley. The Lions led 29-14 at the half and the final score was 69-43 in Gull Lake’s favour. The Lions will now travel to Raymore for the provincial semi final on Nov. 7.
In nine-man action, the Shaunavon Shadows took on Tisdale. The Shadows cruised to victory.  First quarter score was 28-0, while half time score was 48-6. Third quarter score was 67-6 with the final score of 80-6 in favour of the Shadows.
They will now host the provincial 2A nine-man semifinal on Nov. 7 versus Melville. The start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Both the senior boys’ and senior girls’ volleyball league championships have been decided. The Shaunavon Silhouettes hosted the girls’ side Oct. 27. 
In the first match, No. 1 Shaunavon defeated No. 4 Cabri/Hazlet 2-0 (25-16, 25-22). 
In the second match, No. 2 Frontier defeated No. 3 Herbert 2-0 (25-18, 25-19).
On the consolation side, Cabri/Hazlet defeated Herbert 2-1 (25-15, 13-25, 25-23).
The final saw the Frontier Raiders capture the league title with a 2-0 win over Shaunavon (25-13, 25-17).

The senior boys’ championship was held in Vanguard Oct 28.  In the first match, No. 1 Vanguard defeated No. 4 Ponteix 2-0 (25-12, 25-8).  In the second match, No. 2 Frontier defeated No. 3 Shaunavon 2-0 (25-15, 25-22).
On the consolation side, Shaunavon defeated Ponteix 2-0 (25-23, 25-22).
The final saw the Frontier Raiders claim victory over the host Vanguard 2-1 (19-25, 25-8, 25-15).

The SHSAA playoffs for senior volleyball start Nov. 7 with girls’ conference play.  Frontier girls will host 1A including Glentworth, Kincaid/College Mathieu, Mankota, Eastend and Ponteix.
In other 1A action, Cabri/Hazlet, Leader and Vanguard will travel to Central Butte. Top two will advance to regional play.  At the 2A level, Gull Lake Lady Lions will host Eston, Herbert and Fox Valley. Top two advance to regionals. At the 3A level, Shaunavon will travel to Moose Jaw with the top two advancing to regionals. At the 4A level, Maple Creek will go to Kindersley with the top three advancing to regionals.
Regional play for the 1-5A girls and 5A boys will be Nov. 13-14. Boys’ conference play will be held Nov. 14.
The only level hosted locally is 1A boys at Eastend. Participating will be Vanguard, Eastend, Glentworth and Lafleche. Top three advance to regionals. Herbert boys will play 1A conference play at Rouleau with top three advancing.  In 3A conference play, Leader will travel to LCBI (Outlook) with top three advancing.
All the junior volleyball playoffs will be taking place. The following is a list of the subsection and section playoffs and the teams involved:
Nov. 7:
• Cypress Hills girls at Hazlet. Teams include Hazlet, Maple Creek, Fox Valley, Leader and Cabri.  Top two teams advance.
• Whitemud girls at Val Marie. Teams include Val Marie, Shaunavon, Frontier, Eastend and Consul. Top two teams advance.
• Whitemud boys at Shaunavon. Teams include Shaunavon, Frontier, Val Marie and Eastend. Top two teams advance.
The teams advancing to the junior district finals will play on Nov. 14. The locations have yet to be decided.
