Chinook School Division sports report is back for another year

As the students and teachers head back to school, it is time for another year of school sports to begin.


Athletes and coaches will be busy with five fall sports  — football, soccer, volleyball, golf and cross country.
There are four football teams competing in three different categories and leagues.
Gull Lake Lions will take part in the 1A six-man category Conference 2. Their league includes Gull Lake, Wilkie, Plenty, Eatonia, Macklin and Kerrobert. 
The Shaunavon Shadows and Maple Creek Redmen will take part in the nine-man category Conference 2. This league includes Fort Qu’Appelle, Indian Head, Lumsden, Shaunavon and Maple Creek.
Swift Current Colts will participate in the 3A 12-man category taking part in the Moose Jaw league. Teams include Moose Jaw Peacock, MJ Central, MJ Vanier, Yorkton Regional, Weyburn, Estevan and Swift Current. 
Games over the next couple of weeks include: Thurs., Sept. 3: Moose Jaw Peacock at Swift Current Colts; Gull Lake Lions at Wilkie; Fri., Sept. 4: Maple Creek Redmen at Shaunavon Shadows *Friday Nite under the lights starting at 7:30 p.m.; Fri., Sept. 11: Shaunavon Shadows at Lumsden; Eatonia at Gull Lake Lions; Sat., Sept. 12: Swift Current Colts at Yorkton.
The Swift Current Ardens’ soccer team will begin defense of their Moose Jaw soccer league title on Sat., Sept. 12 when they travel to Moose Jaw for a pair of games. They will take on both Moose Jaw Vanier and Weyburn. Their first home game will take place Tues., Sept. 15 when they host Moose Jaw Peacock. 
The SWAC grass green golf championship will take place at Maple Creek Golf course Monday, Sept. 14. Golfers from grades 9-12 will take part in both individual and team competition to try and advance to the provincial championship on Sept. 25-26 in Yorkton.
This will be the last year that SHSAA (Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association) offers sand green golf as part of the provincial championships.
Frontier School, a perennial contender in sand green competition, will take part. Provincials will be held in Punnichy Sept. 25-26. 
Volleyball season will be well underway as teams started practising Sept. 1. Teams will be going to various tournaments and exhibition matches throughout the fall heading towards provincial playoffs in November. The SWAC senior volleyball league will be offered and includes girls on Tuesday nights beginning Sept. 15 and the boys on Wednesday nights beginning Sept. 16. 
Once again SWAC offered the annual volleyball officials’ clinic Sept. 2 at Swift Current Comp lecture theatre.
