Amazing showing by southwest high-school athletes

Marcus Kouri of Swift Current Comp captured double gold medals at the SHSAA provincial track and field championships in Yorkton on June 4 & 5.  He won both the long jump and triple jump in the senior boys category.  In winning the long jump, Marcus set a new provincial record of 7.13m breaking the old mark of 7.05m.   Marcus was also the recipient of the senior boys aggregate award for most points in his age category.  Marcus Kouri of Swift Current Comp captured double gold medals at the SHSAA provincial track and field championships in Yorkton on June 4 & 5.  He won both the long jump and triple jump in the senior boys category.  In winning the long jump, Marcus set a new provincial record of 7.13m breaking the old mark of 7.05m.   Marcus was also the recipient of the senior boys aggregate award for most points in his age category. 

The southwest had a very successful outing at the SHSAA provincial track and field championships in Yorkton June  5-6. 


The weather co-operated with mostly sunny skies and warm temperatures. Athletes from Chinook captured nine individual medals and three relay medals. SHSAA awards gold, silver and bronze medals followed by ribbons for fourth to eighth place. 
The following is a summary of the top eight placements from the southwest:
INDIVIDUALS:
• GOLD — Alex Gray (SCCHS) captured two golds in the midget girls 1500m and 3000m.
• GOLD — Marcus Kouri (SCCHS) captured two golds in the senior boys long jump and triple jump.  In the long jump, he set a new provincial record with a leap of 7.13m breaking the old record of 7.05m.
• GOLD — Greg Rousseaux (SCCHS) won the open boys’ quad event.  This includes long jump, shot put, 100m and 800m events. 
• SILVER — Sarah Moule (Frontier) placed 2nd in junior girls javelin.
• SILVER — Logan Fritzke (SCCHS) placed 2nd in midget boys discus.
• BRONZE — Nixen Voll (Shaunavon) placed 3rd in midget boys long jump.
• BRONZE — Josh Anderson (Gull Lake) placed 3rd in the junior boys 800m
• 4TH place — Gabrielle Gray (SCCHS) in the open girls’ quad; Tenelle Lind (Shaunavon) in midget girls 800m; Kyra Braaten (Cabri) in junior girls long jump; Branden Lemay (SCCHS) in midget boys triple jump.
• 5th place — Josh Anderson (Gull Lake) in junior boys 400m and 1500m; Ashtin Koudelka (Frontier) in junior boys javelin; Jenessa Fournier (Ponteix) in midget girls 1500; Jade Addai (SCCHS) in senior girls 80m hurdles; Jordan Voll (Shaunavon) in junior boys shot put; Jean Luc Mudingayi (Maple Creek) in junior boys long jump; Kyle Tisdale (SCCHS) in junior boys triple jump.
• 6th place — Reagan Martin (SCCHS) in junior boys 100m; Jade Addai (SCCHS) in senior girls 100m and 200m; Mackenzie Froehlich (SCCHS) in junior girls 80m hurdles; Cassie Jans (Gull Lake) in junior girls 400m and long jump; Brittany Rousseaux (SCCHS) in junior girls javelin; Reece Girodat (Gull Lake) in junior girls 3000m; Alex Gray (SCCHS) in midget girls 800m; Nixen Voll (Shaunavon) in midget boys triple jump.
• 7th place — Jaden Kinrade (Frontier) in midget boys javelin; Stephen Addai (SCCHS) in midget boys 400m; Reagan Martin (SCCHS) in junior boys 200m.
• 8th place — Dalton Lightfoot (Frontier) in senior boys shot put; Reece Girodat (Shaunavon) in junior girls 1500m; Kortlynn Fuller (Shaunavon) in midget girls 80m hurdles; Nixen Voll (Shaunavon) and Braedon Friesen (SCCHS) tied in midget boys high jump; Rhyse Coward (SCCHS) in junior girls shot put; Frank Meyers (Herbert) in senior boys 3000m; Jenessa Fournier (Ponteix) in midget girls 3000m; Marcus Kouri (SCCHS) in senior boys 100m.
RELAYS:
• SILVER — 4 x 100m junior boys.  Team included Jordan Voll (Shaunavon), Callen Boutin (Gull Lake), Jean-Luc Mudingayi (Maple Creek) and Reagan Martin (SCCHS).
• BRONZE — 4 x 100m junior girls.  Team included Kyra Braaten (Cabri), Mackenzie Froehlich (SCCHS), Cassie Jans (Gull Lake) and Emmy Froehlich (Shaunavon).
• BRONZE — 4 X 400M open boys.  Team included Greg Rousseaux (SCCHS), Marcus Kouri (SCCHS), Josh Anderson (Gull Lake) and Rhett Carlson (SCCHS).
• 6th — 4 x 100m midget boys.  Team included Branden Lemay (SCCHS), Nixen Voll (Shaunavon), Stephan Addai (SCCHS), and Tye Tremere (Shaunavon).
• 6th — 4 x 400m open girls.  Team included Cassie Jans (Gull Lake), Kyra Braaten (Cabri), Alex Gray (SCCHS) and Gabrielle Gray (SCCHS).
• Marcus Kouri was also named the senior boys aggregate winner with a total of 52 points. 
In school competition, Swift Current Comp was second for 4A schools while Gull Lake was sixth and Shaunavon ninth in the 1A category.  The southwest also received the Gordon Mundle Award for the most improved district. In 2014, the district finished with 710 points and this year improved to 863 points finishing 10th overall.
