Southwest football teams set to advance to semi-final action

Two southwest football teams are advancing to SHSAA provincial semifinals.

In the 1A six-man quarter finals Nov. 1, the Gull Lake Lions defeated the Kerrobert Rebels at home by a score of 59-40. They host the Carrot River Wildcats on Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. 
In the 2A nine-man quarter finals, the Shaunavon Shadows travelled to Kindersley and won by a score of 34-7. The Shadows travel to Humboldt to take on the Mohawks on Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. Should either team advance, the provincial finals are set for Nov. 15. 
The SWAC senior volleyball league championships were held in Herbert. The girls’ finals started Oct. 28 with Herbert defeating Gull Lake 25-11, 25-15. This was followed by Hazlet defeating Vanguard 25-13, 25-21. The consolation final saw Gull Lake finish on a winning note defeating Vanguard 25-18, 25-18.
The final saw the Laurels repeat as league champs defeating Hazlet 25-15, 25-18. Congratulations to the Laurels and their coaches Jennifer Doll and Crystal Boorman.
The boys’ final Oct. 29 started with an upset when the Shaunavon Shadows defeated Herbert 25-16, 6-25, 25-20. The second match saw Frontier beat Vanguard 25-17, 25-18.
In the consolation final, Herbert defeated Vanguard 25-16, 25-20. The final saw the Frontier Raiders win the title for the second year in a row defeating Shaunavon 25-18, 25-13. Congrats to the Raiders and their coaches Keegan Ham and Len Fyfe.
The junior volleyball finals are well underway. Thanks to subsection and section hosts Wymark girls, Swift Current Comp Grade 9 girls, Ponteix boys, Consul girls, Eastend boys, Leader girls and boys. The teams advancing to the junior district finals are: Rolling Hills A girls winner —Waldeck; Rolling Hills B girls winner — O.M. Irwin; Rolling Hills B boys winner —Wymark; Cypress Hills girls winners — 1st Fox Valley,  2nd Hazlet; Cypress Hills boys winners — 1st Leader, 2nd Fox Valley; Whitemud girls winners — 1st Shaunavon, 2nd Frontier; Whitemud boys winners — 1st Eastend, 2nd Shaunavon.
There is one subsection left to be played — Rolling Hills A boys — which will take place Nov. 3.  The above teams will advance to district finals set for Nov. 15. Locations to be announced. 
Senior volleyball teams will also start SHSAA volleyball playoffs. The first weekend of competition is Nov. 8 when the girls start conference play.
In the 1A category, Ponteix girls will host Cabri, Eastend, Frontier, Hazlet and Vanguard. Games will start at 10 a.m. 
In the 2A category, Fox Valley girls will host Herbert, Leader and Beechy.  Games will start at 10 a.m.
In the 4A girls’ category, Maple Creek will host Kindersley, Outlook and Rosetown with a 10 a.m. start time.  Gull Lake and Shaunavon girls will play in the 3A category on the road at Assiniboia. 
Boys’ teams will start conference play on Nov.  15. Ponteix will host Cabri, Fox Valley, Frontier, and Vanguard.  Start time will be 9 a.m. The Swift Current Comp Colts will host 5A boys’ regional play on Nov. 14-15. Teams participating include Yorkton Regional, Balgonie, MJ Peacock, MJ Vanier, Estevan, Weyburn and SCCHS.
