Two graduates of the Swift Current Junior SunDogs program and a rising star on the Moose Jaw high school scene are among the first recruits announced by SunDogs Athletics to its women’s volleyball team for the 2011 Prairie Athletic Conference season. Confirmed to be joining the team this year are Erica Waldenberger, Sloane Meyer, and Kaitlyn Deg.

Meyer and Deg played last year with the Swift Current Ardens high school team, and also suited up for the Swift Current Junior SunDogs’ 18-and-under women’s team that captured Tier 2 bronze at Saskatchewan Volleyball Association provincials. Deg is likely to see time as a power hitter for the SunDogs while Meyer has played at setter and power, but may see time this year as a libero as well.

“Kaitlyn is a great all-around athlete, with a lot of natural leadership ability too,” said second-year SunDogs coach Morgan Halyk. “Sloane is another natural leader on the court, and she can play any position. She is someone you can count on at almost any position in almost any situation.”

Waldenberger comes to the SunDogs from the Vanier Collegiate Spirits volleyball team in Moose Jaw, and has also been prominent on the midget hockey and track and field scenes in recent years as well. A practical nursing student in Swift Current, Waldenberger is an experienced middle hitter who could be a two-year player for the SunDogs.

“She’s got height and she’s an all-around first-rate passer,” said Halyk. “All three girls bring something unique to the team and will give opposing teams something to think about every time we’re on the court.”
