Swift Current

Swift Current Indians manager Joe Carnahan, starting pitcher Dan Rogers, and first/third baseman Relly Mercurio are the WMBL club’s three stars for the week ending July 9. (Players are listed with college/hometown.)

FIRST STAR – Joe Carnahan (Vanguard University/Swift Current, Sask.)

The Indians’ fourth-year bench boss picked up his 100th win as the Tribe’s manager Friday in a 1-0 win over the league-leading Medicine Hat Mavericks. Carnahan has a 100-45 regular season record with one WMBL championship to show for his three-plus seasons as Indians manager.

SECOND STAR – Dan Rogers (Texas A&M Kingsville/Redwood City, Calif.)

The big righty did something July 3 no Indians pitcher has done all year when he threw a complete game. Rogers finished with seven strikeouts, allowing three hits, in a 15-0 trouncing of the hometown Edmonton Prospects. Rogers has started five games for Swift Current this year, currently owning a 2-2 record with a 2.87 ERA.

THIRD STAR – Relly Mercurio (Texas Christian/Houston, Texas)

The newest member of the Swift Current Indians was a modest 5-for-20 at the plate in five games last week but made the most of the hits he had, hitting hitting his first home run and his first five RBIs as an Indian. The six-foot-five Mercurio also added three walks and a stolen base to round out his stat line.
