Broncos acquire 12 at 2011 WHL Bantam Draft

The Swift Current Broncos Hockey Club have acquired 12 players at the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft which was held Thursday in Calgary.

 

Brycen Martin was selected second overall by the Broncos.  The 6’1”, 160 pound defenceman played 31 games with the Calgary Bisons of the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League (AMBHL) this season where he recorded 42 points through six goals and 36 assists.  He also recorded 60 PIM this season.

 

"We thought Martin was the most dynamic defenceman in the draft so we were very happy with the selection", says Bronco Assistant General Manager and Director of Player Personnel, Jamie Porter.  "He skates and carries the puck very well and we think he will be a valuable asset to our power play at quite a young age."

 

Zach Gonek was selected 13th overall by the Broncos.  The 6’1”, 185 pound defenceman played 28 games with the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres of the AMBHL where he notched 9 goals and 13 assists for 22 points with 28 PIM this season.   Both Martin and Gonek were listed as the AMBHL’s Top Defenceman for the 2010-11 season. 

"Gonek is a very strong and powerful skater", states Bronco Assistant General Manager and Director of Player Personnel, Jamie Porter.  "He has a great offensive upside and plays a solid, defensive game.  He is also quite a physical and tough player."

Dakota Odgers was selected 24th overall by the Broncos.  The 5'11", 187 pound Spy Lake, SK product only played two games for the Melville Millionaires this season (due to injury) where he recorded two goals and one assist.

Cavin Leth was selected 39th overall by the Broncos.  The 5'11", 167 pound forward played 32 games with the Lethbridge Val Matteoti Golden Hawks of the AMBHL where the Taber, AB product totaled 45 points through 28 goals and 17 assists.  He also led the team in PIM with 120.

Jordan Wittman was selected 46th overall by the Broncos.  The 5'11", 170 pound forward from Stewart Valley, SK played 22 games with the Swift Current Kabos Raiders where he notched 29 goals and 24 assists for 53 points and totaled 10 PIM.

"Wittman is a power-forward type.  We liked how he continuously proved himself in the second half of the season.  He drives hard on the net and is quite a skilled player", says Bronco Assistant General Manager and Director of Player Personnel, Jamie Porter.

Alec Dillon was selected 104th overall by the Broncos.  The 6'1", 137 pound goaltender plays with the Juan de Fuca Grizzlies (who were recently crowned the Bantam Tier 2 Provincial Champions this season).

Chris Koukis was selected 134th overall by the Broncos.  The 5'9", 150 pound forward played 49 games with the Bantam Team 1 of the Program of Excellence Hockey Academy where he led the team in goals with 35 while netting 31 assists for 66 points.  He also recorded 24 PIM.

Jake DeBrusk was selected 137th overall by the Broncos.  The 5'6", 130 pound forward played 33 games for the SSAC Southgate Lions (2010-11 Provincial Champions), where he totaled 39 points through 11 goals and 28 assists, while recording 18 PIM.

Victor Dombrovskiy was selected 156th overall by the Broncos.  The 5'10", 167 pound defenceman from Burnaby, BC plays with the Burnaby Winter Club (2010-11 Western Canadian Bantam Champions).

Cameron Hughes was selected 178th overall by the Broncos.  The 5'8", 154 pound left winger from Edmonton, AB played 29 games with the Bantam AAA - Lehigh Cement of the Canadian Athletic Club where he netted 21 goals and 21 assists for 42 points.

Riley Welsh was selected 200th overall by the Broncos.  The 6', 160 pound left winger hails from Oakbank, MB and plays for the Springfield Ice Hawks Bantam AA team.

Cole Bevan was selected 213th overall by the Broncos.  The 6'1", 180 pound defenceman from Surrey, BC plays for the Cloverdale Bantam AAA Colts.
