Earl Monkman has heard the complaints about the Friendship Centre’s boxing event over the past few years and he is trying to make it better.

Last year’s event was held at the Recreation Centre and the Friendship Centre’s executive director heard the parking situation wasn’t ideal.

This year, the club’s boxing card will be held at the Palliser Pavilion, where there will be ample space inside and even more for spectators to park.

The event will take place April 23 at 7 p.m.; doors open at 6 p.m.

The event is open to boxers older than nine years old and will feature competitors from Saskatoon, Medicine Hat and Regina.

Monkman expects approximately 10 bouts to be on the card, three of which will include local boxers.

Jarid Clarke, a 14-year-old who competed at nationals in Quebec, will have a bout as will Lee Knourek.
Aaron Rhodes, 20, will be making his debut there.

“It looks like we’ll have him matched up against a boxer from Saskatoon in his first bout. Aaron’s 192 pounds,” said Monkman. “This other guy is about 192 to 195 and he’s had no bouts either. It should be a good go.”

A fourth local boxer may compete as well.

Tickets for the Friendship Centre’s boxing event are $10 each or $5 for students. Tables of eight are also available.

Tickets may be purchased at the door before the event or at the Friendship Centre.
