Groenheyde made 77 saves in two starts last week including a season-high 45 saves on Friday night to blank the Red Deer Rebels 4-0 where he was named the game’s first star recording his second shutout of the season. He also claimed third star honours on Saturday night with 32 saves in a 2-1 losing cause against the Edmonton Oil Kings.
Groenheyde, a 20-year-old from White Rock, BC, is playing in his fourth full WHL season. He is among the league leaders in minutes played this season with 3237 and carries a 21-27-1-5 record in 58 games for the Broncos with a goals-against-average of 3.46 and save percentage of .900.
Also considered for the award this week was Petr Mrazek of the Ottawa 67’s who went 2-0-0-0 with a goals-against-average of 1.00 and save percentage of .975. Former winner Etienne Marcoux of the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada also won two games including a shutout victory with a goals-against-average of 1.00 and save percentage of .959.
