Congratulations to the Cabri mixed curling team who captured the gold medal at the SHSAA provincial curling championships March 3 at Abbey rink.

Eight teams from Cabri, Canwood, Strasbourg, Saskatoon Tommy Douglas, Regina O’Neill, Kelliher, Assiniboia and Unity took part.

The winning team from Cabri is composed of skip Russell Green, 3rd Taylor Stenerson, 2nd Klarke Braaten, lead Mariah Jacklin and coach Ron Brawn.

The team had a great weekend going through the bonspiel undefeated.  They started on Friday with wins over Saskatoon Tommy Douglas (7-6) and Canwood (9-4). This put them in the A final against Unity which they won 8-1. They then advanced to the championship round.  In the semi final, they came up against Unity for a second time. In a nail biter of a game, they won 5-3. This put them in the gold medal match against Kelliher. This game came right down to the last shot in the 8th end when skip Green chipped out the Kelliher shot stone to win 6-3.  The bronze medal match up saw Unity defeat Strasbourg 8-5.  It was a great weekend of curling. Hats off to the communities of Cabri and Abbey for hosting such a wonderful event.

The Swift Current boys’ curling team was at provincials in Weyburn on March 2/3. The team was composed of skip Grady Lamontagne, 3rd Jesse Wallace-Perkins, 2nd Tom Potts, lead Jacob Menun and coach James Kissick. The boys lost their first match to the eventual gold medalists Saskatoon Holy Cross by a very close score of 3-2.  They followed this up with 2 wins in the B event:  7-6 over Estevan and 7-6 over Weyburn.  This put the boys in the B final vs Foam Lake.  Unfortunately they came up short by a 10-1 score. The boys had one last chance in the C qualifier but lost 8-3 to North Battleford.

Our junior and senior basketball leagues have come to a finish.  The senior boys final saw Shaunavon Shadows capture the title with a 98-65 win over Swift Current Jr. Colts on Feb. 28.  The Shadows went through league games and playoffs without a lose.  Leading the way for Shaunavon was Matt Benesh with 31 pts and Jesse Voll with 21.  The Colts’ high scorer was Reid Fritzke with 14.  Congrats to the Shadows and their coach Mark Benesh.

The junior girls’ final saw Gull Lake win their first title on home court with a 57-36 win over Swift Current Comp gr. 9’s on Feb. 29.  Congrats to the young lady Lions and their coach Chantie Champigny.

The junior boys’ final on March 1 saw the Swift Current gr. 9’s win their 5th straight league title with a 76-42 win over Herbert.  The Colts advanced to the final with a semi final victory over Shaunavon 72-51.  Congrats to the young Colts and their coach Kevin Synder.
