Broncos give fans at Swift Current's iplex something to cheer about on long weekend

The Swift Current Broncos may be in tough to catch the 8th place Brandon Wheat Kings in the WHL's Eastern Conference, but at least they gave their fans something to cheer about in their last two home games.


The Broncos edged the Conference's second best team the Moose Jaw Warriors 5-4 in a shootout as Brad Hoban scored the lone goal in the one-on-one frame. Jon Groenheyde was able to stop all three Warriors including Team Canada captain Quinton Howden to preserve the win. Howden had scored at 7:52 of the third to send it to overtime and eventually the shootout.


Hoban, Taylor Vause, Coda Gordon and Graham Craig all scored for the Broncos. Grodenheyde stopped 32 of 36 shots while the Broncos had 34 shots on Spencer Tremblay.


On Saturday, the Broncos blitzed the Saskatoon Blades 8-3 at the Credit Union iplex after losing 7-3 in Saskatoon Friday night. The Broncos took a 4-0 lead after the first and never looked back.


Gordon and Levi Bews each scored twice. Vause, Ryon Moser, Josh Derko, and Graham Black each scored once in a chippy affair.


The game had 80 minutes in penalties including five, ten minute misconducts. a fight and a double spearing penalty on Jesse Paradis of Saskatoon.


Next action for Swift Current is Wednesday when they play host to the Prince Albert Raiders. Gametime is 7 p.m.
