Swift Current Broncos Brycen Martin and Brett Lernout selected back to back in NHL entry draft

Swift Current Broncos defencemen Brycen Martin and Brett Lernout have been selected back to back in the 3rd round of the NHL Entry Draft. 

 

Lernout, the native of Winnipeg, Manitoba went 73rd overall to the Montreal Canadiens. Martin, the Calgary, Alberta product went one pick later to the Buffalo Sabres.  

Martin was selected 2nd overall by the Broncos in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft. In his second full season with the Swift Current Broncos, Martin had 6 goals and 31 assists for 37 points in 72 games.

Martin suited up for Team Cherry in the CHL Top Prospects Game earlier this season and helped Team Pacific to a World U-17 hockey Challenge Silver Medal in 2013. 

Lernout, the 6’4 205 pound product of Winnipeg, Manitoba, came to the Broncos from the Saskatoon Blades via trade during the 2012/2013 regular season in exchange for a 4th round bantam draft pick.  In 72 games, the 1995 born Lernout had 8 goals and 14 assists for 22 points in 72 games. Lernout added 103 penalty minutes.

“He came in as the number 6 d-man and put in the work to have some success” said Broncos Coach and GM Mark Lamb of Lernout.  “Being drafted in the 3rd round is a great story.” Added Lamb.

“He’s going to an organization that’s rebuilding. Marty has come a long way. He’s maturing all the time and will have a monster year for us this season” said Lamb of Brycen Martin.
