The Swift Current Broncos perfect record away from home came to a close on Saturday night as they were handed a 5-4 overtime loss by the Kootenay ICE.

Colton Veluso opened the scoring for the ICE 7:08 into the first period as the Broncos were off to a bit of a slow start in the first half of the period.

Swift Current did take advantage of a pair of power plays in the second half of the frame as Florida Panthers prospect Aleksi Heponiemi scored on both man advantages. Heponiemi floated in a wrister by ICE goaltender and former Bronco Bailey Brkin and then blasted a one-timer from the right point to put Swift Current up 2-1.

The second period was a back and forth frenzy with both teams netting two goals apiece.

Cale Fleury one-timed in a laser from the point while the ICE were on a routine power play and it was 2-2 a few minutes into the second period.

20-year-old forward Glenn Gawdin made it 3-2 Swift Current after his wrist shot from a bad angle deep in Kootenay territory beat Brkin leading to Kurtis Chapman entering the game to relieve Brkin.

A costly turnover by Broncos defenceman Jake Hobson led to a goal from Gilian Kohler 36 seconds after Gawdin's goal.

The Broncos would get their one goal lead back though as the WHL's leading goal scorer Tyler Steenbergen slammed in his 21st of the campaign after jumping on a rebound from a Colby Sissons shot. The goal marked the Broncos third power play marker of the night.

Kootenay refused to quit as they pressed for the tying goal, hitting a couple posts on scoring opportunities in the first several minutes of the third period. Fleury then was credited for his second power play goal of the night after his shot from the point deflected its way past Broncos goaltender Logan Flodell.

Shots on goal were 34-25 in favour of Kootenay as overtime was required to determine a winner.

Kootenay would end the Broncos perfection away from home this season as Colton Kroeker scored on a two-on-one break to send Swift Current to a 5-4 overtime loss. The Broncos are now 6-0-1-0 away from home.

Swift Current took advantage of their power plays, scoring three times on four man advantages while Kootenay went 2/6. Final shots on goal were 36-26 for the ICE.

Swift Current returns home for a pair of games against the Saskatoon Blades and Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday, October 27th and Saturday, October 28th respectively. Puck drop is 7:00pm for both contests.
