The Swift Current Broncos finally can say they played a home game after hosting the Pioneer Coop Home Opener on Saturday night against the Kootenay ICE. Swift Current scored five times to win their fifth straight overall as they downed the visiting ICE by a 5-2 score in front of a sold out crowd at the Innovation Credit Union i-Plex.

Broncos forward Tyler Steenbergen continued his torrid pace of lighting the lamp, scoring the opening goal at the 13:03 mark of the first period after a beautiful pass by team mate Glenn Gawdin found the blade of his stick.

Steenbergen then scored again as he deposited the rebound off an Aleksi Heponiemi snap shot to make it 2-0 Swift just 35 seconds into the middle frame.

Good things happen when the puck is directed towards the net as New Jersey Devils prospect Colby Sissons was credited with a power play goal after his shot from the point bounced off the ICE defender and snuck through the five hole of former Broncos goaltender Bailey Brkin.

Tanner Sidaway got the ICE on the board as his initial shot from the left wing just got through Logan Flodell's equipment and in behind the goaltender closing the gap to 3-1. Shots on goal were 27-14 in favour of Swift Current through 40 minutes.

Gawdin added some insurance in the third period by completing a nice toe drag move into the ICE zone and zipping one by Brkin to push the cushion to 4-1.

Heponiemi capped off the Broncos five goal output 9:30 into the third period and Swift Current went on to earn the 5-2 victory.

Shots on goal were 34-22 in favour of Swift Current. The Broncos top ranked power play produced again, capitalizing twice on five opportunities while holding the ICE scoreless on three man advantages of their own.

Swift Current now sets up a juicy matchup with the Moose Jaw Warriors on Sunday afternoon as both clubs enter the game boasting 5-0-0 records to sit tied for first place in the East Division standings. Puck drop is set for 4:00pm at Mosaic Place in Moose Jaw on October 8th.
