The Brooks Bandits of the Alberta Junior Hockey League have acquired 1996-born forward Tyrell Mappin (Big Valley, AB) from the Drumheller Dragons in exchange for 1997-born forward Rhett Kingston (Black Diamond, AB) and future considerations, the team announced today.

Mappin, 19, led Drumheller in scoring this season with 27 points (5 goals, 22 assists) in 26 games. He currently sits tied for 22nd in the AJHL in scoring, and 9th in the league in assists. Mappin also scored one goal in 3 games this season with the Prince Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League (WHL).

“Ty is a dynamic offensive player that we’ve had a tough time playing against the past few years,” said Bandit head coach and general manager Ryan Papaioannou. “His addition brings us grit and toughness which is something that will complement our forward group.

“His numbers alone show his abilities,” he added. “We are excited about this acquisition and believe Ty will have an opportunity to accomplish great things in Brooks.”

Last season, the 5’11”, 165lb forward scored 53 points (18 goals, 35 assists) in 46 games with the Olds Grizzlys, ranking second on that team in scoring. In his 118-game AJHL career, Mappin has averaged just under a point per game, with 105 points (31 goals, 74 assists).

Kingston, 18, had scored 1 goal and 1 assist in six games with the Bandits after being acquired from the Notre Dame Hounds of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL), where he had recorded 15 points (7 goals, 8 assists) in 17 games in his rookie season.

The Bandits would like to thank Rhett for his contribution to the organization and welcome Ty Mappin to the team. Mappin is expected to make his Bandits debut on Thursday night when the Bandits travel to Okotoks to take on the Oilers at 7:00 PM.

Tickets for the Bandits’ next home game, Friday against the defending league champion Spruce Grove Saints, are on sale online at tickets.brooksbandits.ca, by phone at (403) 501-0122, or in person at the Centennial Regional Arena.
