The Picture Butte Atom Blades travelled to Provincials March 13 in Caroline, Alta. — the first time the team has done so in about four years.

The Picture Butte Atom Blades started the season off by putting themselves in spuds Atom “A” Division.
Throughout the season they worked hard to build and improve their team through every practice and game, ending the season in second place with 10 wins, two ties and three losses.
Provincial games started with the team entering the first series with Vauxhall. Defeating them, the team moved on to the second round against Claresholm.
Losing the first game 3-1 required Picture Butte to win the next game by at least two goals. With a strong third period, the team managed to force the game into sudden death over time.
Scoring 38 seconds into that overtime moved Picture Butte forward to the final series games against Pincher Creek. Beating Pincher Creek in both games 5-4 secured Picture Butte’s position representing Zone 5 in the Alberta Provincials finals.
On March 13, the Picture Butte Atoms joined the rest of Alberta in Caroline to Battle to become Alberta’s D champions.
At provincials the team won silver in the D level.
They played March 13 at 9 a.m. against Thorsby winning 6-3.
All teams took part in opening ceremonies and spaghetti banquet with air band competitions.
On March 14 at 9 a.m. they played Dutchess winning 14-8. That evening the team won 4-3 against Smokey River putting them in the semi-finals on Sunday against Mallaig. The Picture Butte team won 7-5.
In between games Kris Russel, a defensemen for the Calgary Flames, stopped at the rink and the team had their photograph taken with him.
The final game was played the Sunday afternoon and Mayerthorpe beat Picture Butte 10-4, giving the Blades the silver medal.
The players did a good job on the ice all weekend. Coaches, parents, family and friends could not have walked away any more proud.
The team will play in the Picture Butte Arena Friday, March 20 at 6 p.m. against Raymond in a playoff game for the league banner.
