The City of Brooks is going to be acting as the host community to Team Latvia, who will be competing in the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship.  Team Latvia arrived in the community Dec. 18 and will stay until Dec. 23.

During their stay, Team Latvia will be practicing at the Centennial Regional Arena and will be playing in two pre-competition games: one versus the Czech Republic held in Okotoks and one versus Denmark held in Brooks.

Along with daily practices on and off the ice, Team Latvia has also been invited to participate in some other activities such as a welcome reception, a regional bus tour and free use of the Lakeside Leisure Centre.  The players have also been invited to take in some local hockey action and have been given tickets to attend a Brooks Bandits game on Wednesday, December 21st.

Mayor Martin Shields states that “the City of Brooks wants to make sure the team has a warm welcome to our community and remembers our wonderful western hospitality when they return home”.  Being chosen to act as a host municipality, along with hosting a pre-tournament game, will once again cast an international spotlight on Brooks.

Tickets for the pre-tournament game between Latvia and Denmark are currently on sale for $25 each.  Tickets can be purchased at the Centennial Regional Arena or online at www.brooksbandits.ca.  Tickets are also available for the Brooks Bandits game which Team Latvia will be attending.
