Prejudice in society must not be tolerated

Are intolerance and prejudice slowly becoming a character of the Canadian society?
For the past few months, there have been indiscriminate negative and disrespectful comments about Syrian refuges across the nation.
The concern being Canada taking a share of Syrian refugees is going to distort the balance of the nation and welcome financial burdens.
While major EU nations are extending their co-operation by helping refugee victims; should Canada, known globally for humanitarian support and democracy, watch from a distance? Then why did the nation participate in the World Wars and lost precious lives and made huge financial sacrifices for establishing stability, peace and democracy? Was that because it was a European war?
Why is this apathy towards helpless and defenceless Syrian refugees?
We need self introspection to decide what we wish to be in the future, a humanitarian and compassionate nation or a nation surviving on selfish jingoistic nationalism.
