Canadian Agricultural Safety Week 2015 passes through Alberta with a whimper and not a bang.
As another Ag Safety week comes to an end Alberta Farmworkers get yet another cutesie slogan to help keep them safe, “Be the difference.”
What may be good advice from experts to the rest of Canada’s agriculture community, doesn’t work in Alberta. Alberta farm workers are still denied the right to know about workplace dangers and are also without the right to refuse dangerous
work. The sage advice from Alberta Agriculture Officials that farm workers should get plenty of rest, drink lots of liquids and eat proper food would be laughable if it wasn’t so pathetic.
Our Alberta government under new management, continues its government-created violations of farm workers’ Charter Rights. Premier Jim Prentice and his Employment Minister Ric McIver believe tradition and politics are reason enough to leave workers in one of Alberta’s most dangerous industries completely unprotected without any Legislation.
It is unfortunate Alberta’s PC government and consumers don’t value this workforce nor the work they perform. Keep your cutesie slogans, recognize farm workers as persons and end these government-created violations of Alberta Farmworker Charter Rights.
Premier Prentice, it’s time to do right by our farm workers.
