SaskPower has shortlisted Swift Current as one of two potential sites for a proposed electrical generation facility.

“Our residents want us to pursue projects that have the potential to boost our local economy and I’m proud of the effort that our team has put in,” said Jerrod Schafer, Swift Current Mayor. “I wish to thank council for their support and administration for their diligence in working to help bring this $700 million dollar project one step closer to Swift Current.”

The City submitted an unsolicited proposal on behalf of its residents to SaskPower in mid- October to identify Swift Current as the ideal location for a new electrical generation facility. The City consulted with the engineering firm AECOM to provide technical expertise and assistance in developing the proposal. City administration worked closely with AECOM to create a comprehensive proposal that demonstrated the ‘Swift Current Advantage’ to SaskPower. Four potential sites near the communities of Condie, Swift Current, Peebles and Wolverine were identified by SaskPower prior to the City’s proposal submission.

“While we realize that the ball is in SaskPower’s court, there is no doubt that the efforts of our organization help to give us an edge in securing long-term investment in our community,” said Mayor Schafer. “The City will continue to persistently attract economic activity to Swift Current in an effort to enhance and strengthen our region.”

SaskPower has indicated that it intends to proceed with groundwater testing and other studies of the shortlisted sites to determine the optimum plant location. It will also monitor electric load growth in the province and assess the need for, and timing of, the next natural gas power generation facility. The final selection of the facility site will be made when SaskPower determines that a new power project is required. The other site shortlisted by SaskPower was Wolverine, which is located near Lanigan.
