As part of the ongoing celebration to honour Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne, Swift Current Mayor Jerrod Schafer awarded a Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal to long term businessman and volunteer Ron Heeg.

One of the eligibility criteria includes having made a significant contribution to a particular province, territory, region or community within Canada.

Mayor Schafer said, "Ron started Heeg's Drug Mart years ago and worked very hard to grow his business and serve customers of Southwest Saskatchewan.  Not only did he build a business which has provided great service to customers and employment for our residents, with his partner Al Chilton they really grew a small family business into a national store."

"However, Ron has been a tireless supporter and advocate for Swift Current.  Whether it's raising money and entertaining us as a dedicated member of the Shrine Club, as a local sports supporter, helping to raise money for the Lyric Theatre or as a board member of the Cypress Health Region, Ron has a lengthy and diverse list of ways he has helped to build our community, province and country.  Today we say thank you by honouring him with this medal."

Ron was presented his medal amongst staff, friends and Family at Pharmasave on Friday November 16.
