The Swift Current & District Chamber of Commerce announced Batco Manufacturing as the recipient of the SCBEX – Spirit of Swift Current award for Member Business of the Year at a presentation at the facility on Oct 2.

“It’s a real honor, and we really have to give the credit to our staff,” noted founder Art Stenson, who will be retiring from the business at the end of the month. “Many of them have been working with us since day one or shortly after, and the place really couldn’t run without them. We are very happy to have been nominated.”
The business was established in 1992 as a modest venture to build two-wheel hand carts. Stenson’s attention soon turned to grain handling, and he developed a prototype for the unload belt conveyor. From there, an industry was born.
“The business was originally started in a garage, and gradually moved into this facility,” explained Jennifer Lyster, CEO of Swift Current Chamber of Commerce. “They just kept expanding, and now they’ve even outgrown this space. It’s a very successful business in a strong industry.”
Currently, Batco Manufacturing has approximately 70 employees, and holds the position as the number one portable grain conveying manufacturer in North America. Stenson feels that the reason Batco has achieved such success lies in their focus on customer service.
“We really stress to our dealers and distributors all over North America that if there is any problem with our equipment, to get out and fix it right away,” he noted. “If you take care of the end user, they'll keep coming back and supporting you. That's what we've done for the past twenty years.”
The recognition is even more special for Stenson this year, since it is Batco’s 20th anniversary, and Stenson’s retirement year. He noted that each year with the company has been a good one.
“Every year that you can keep the doors open is another highlight, especially a few years back,” said Stenson. “Even when the economy was tough and everyone was complaining about the price of grain and everything else, we still seemed to grow a bit each year. I’m not upset about retiring because we have such a great staff, and I know everything will run just fine. I'm sure I'll still be here for coffee pretty often to see the guys.”
The rest of the SCBEX – Spirit of Swift Current awards will be handed out at the Awards Gala on Oct 18 at Sky Centre in Living Sky Casino. Tickets for the event are still available by contacting the Chamber at 306-773-7268.
