The 14th Annual SCBEX awards are showcasing some of the less-told stories of innovation and entrepreneurship within the community with the Spirit of Swift Current awards.

The revamped awards program will honour both businesses and non-profit organizations in Swift Current who contribute to the vibrancy of the city.
“From day one that it was created, this is the only event that recognizes businesses and business achievement,” noted Swift Current Chamber of Commerce CEO Jennifer Lyster. “It reflects the community as a whole, showcasing businesses that have stood out within the community in one day, or one year, or a series of years.”
This year’s Spirit of Swift Current awards includes 16 nominated finalists within the seven award categories. Lyster noted the biggest hindrance the program has faced over the past 14 years is getting the community to embrace the nomination process. To vote: visit news.php
“This is your chance to put forth businesses that you feel need to be in there, and I think people maybe aren’t aware that nominating a business really is that simple,” she admitted. “If people are disappointed that they don’t see a business here that they feel deserved to be included, it’s possible that business just didn’t fit the criteria, or even receive a nomination.”
However, the community has warmly embraced the program, and looks forward to the ceremony every year. The event is consistently sold out, and Lyster noted it is a great opportunity to hear some fascinating stories of local businesses — both newly-established and long-running businesses alike.
“It’s so important for the community as a whole to appreciate our local businesses and show them some credit and distinction,” said Lyster. “It’s great motivation for people who are younger, who have maybe toyed with the idea of opening a business here. This gets them thinking about the future of Swift Current, showcasing our sustainability and economic viability. Businesses here are thriving, and this is a great chance to celebrate that.”
Announcement of the 2011 recipient of the Member Business of the Year will be made prior to the event at a special media conference on Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.
Tickets are still available for the 2011 SCBEX – Spirit of Swift Current Awards Gala, which is set for Oct. 18, part of National Small Business Week. The event will be held at Sky Centre, in the Living Sky Casino.
