The 11th annual Relay for Life in Swift Current will take place on June 1 to 2 at its new venue, the Swift Current Comprehensive High School track.

Below is the address by cancer survivor Arlene McKenzie at the City of Swift Current Council meeting on May 28 during the proclamation of May 27 to June 2 as “Relay for Life Week.”

The Canadian Cancer Society is pleased to host Swift Current's 11th annual Relay for Life. The event will take place June 1st to June 2nd at the Swift Current Comprehensive High School track.

Relay for Life is recognized around the world as a time to honour those who have experienced cancer, It is a night of celebration and a tribute to the lives of loved ones who have been touched by the disease.

Relay for Life is a 12-hour event of fun, friendship and fundraising with the ultimate goal being to eradicate cancer.

Four ceremonies are involved – the opening ceremony at approximately 7 p.m., followed by the survivor walk; the touching luminary ceremony beginning this year at 10:45 p.m; a fight back ceremony at midnight and closing ceremony at 6:45 a.m.

As part of the moving luminary ceremony, luminaries are lit in honour of survivors and in memory of those who have lost their battle with cancer. The luminaries burn throughout the night as participants walk the track, recognizing the battle that is faced every day by survivors and remembering those who are gone too soon.

Team participants also take part in the organized team events and enjoy the scheduled entertainment.

Money raised for the event goes to support the work of the Canadian Cancer Society in the areas of prevention, advocacy, research, information and support services.

Ninety-five cents of every dollar raised in Saskatchewan stays in Saskatchewan.

In 2012 we are pleased and excited to be hosting two Relays in the great Southwest – one in Swift Current, the other in Leader. More information is available by calling the Canadian Cancer Society office at 306-773-6422 or stopping by at 43 – 1st Avenue NE. There is still time to register your team, sign up as a survivor or purchase a luminary.
