Swift Current’s Central School will receive its outdoor classroom.
Principal Bryan Braun received word on Tuesday that the school had won the main prize in the Majesta and Tree Canada’s Trees of Knowledge Competition.

The grant will be used to help develop an outdoor classroom at the school.
“The students and staff are extremely excited about winning the outdoor classroom, but realize that it would not have been possible without the support of the entire community,” said Braun about the win. “We look forward to building a classroom that we can share and be proud of for our entire community.”
In the letter to the school from Tree Canada, Majesta and Focus on Forests informing of the win, officials said, “We are impressed by how your school has engaged and motivated your community to vote for your outdoor classroom project. You should be very proud of your achievement.”
The application process involved submitting an essay setting goals for the project and constructing a site plan, and also featured a unique video made by the students. A committee of people from Central School applied for the grant including Kindergarten teacher Shantel Roszell, Braun, Grade 1 teacher Tanya Hansen, Pre-K teacher Sherry Voth, and Grade 4 teacher Janelle Keller.
The students have been involved with the process from day one, helping with planning and design
and with the contest application. They will also be responsible for helping to set up the facility, and care for it when it is complete.
The project is slated to be started this fall with a completion date in November. Tree Canada will contribute $17,500 towards the outdoor classroom.
