Nearly 40 years ago, a hero emerged. Being diagnosed with bone cancer in his right leg in 1977 and later having it amputated approximately six inches above the knee, Terry Fox ran across Canada raising money for cancer research and creating awareness of one of the most wide-spread diseases of our time.

Terry’s Marathon of Hope has raised millions of dollars for cancer research. He is truly one of our heroes. Embarking on a run with only one leg while fighting cancer, Terry Fox was determined to make a difference. And he did!
“There can be no reason for me to stop. No matter what pain I suffer, it is nothing compared to the pain of those who have cancer, of those who endure treatment,” said Terry Fox.
Terry lost his battle with cancer  just one month short of his 23 birthday. In the last four years of his life, Fox made a massive impact on the world of cancer research and his Marathon of Hope is still alive today.
The Terry Fox Organization is looking for a volunteer run organizer to carry the torch. Due to some unforeseen circumstances, the organizer who was already in place is unable to facilitate the run on September 16, 2018.
“There has been a run organizer in place for quite a few years but she’s had something come up with family and she’s not available to do the run. Her co-organizer has recently moved away. We are trying to find someone to step in kind of last minute to make sure that it actually does happen on the day of,” said Allison Doan, Provincial Manager. “We are looking for someone who is fairly well connected in the community.  Part of what the run organizer does is bring people to the run and encourage the participants. Someone who is fairly organized is ideal”.
That’s where you come in. Not only is being a volunteer a rewarding experience, you will be giving back to your community by bringing Terry Fox’s message of hope, courage and determination forward. The organization is 100% volunteer-run and the Marathon of Hope in Swift Current can’t go forward if someone doesn’t step forward.
The Terry Fox Organization’s mission is to ‘maintain the vision and principles of Terry Fox while raising money for cancer research through the annual Terry Fox Run, Terry Fox School Run, as well as via memoriam donations and planned giving’.
Terry Fox himself said, “Anything is possible if you try”. The organization hopes that someone will step forward to carry on the legacy of Terry Fox for another year.
