Charges against 17 year-old youth regarding explosives found in Swift Current parking lot

An incident involving what looked to be a pipe bomb has resulted in charges to a 17 year-old Swift Current youth.


At approximately 1:00 a.m. June 14, members from the Swift Current Municipal RCMP Detachment received a complaint of an item resembling a pipe bomb in the 400 block of Herbert Street East in Swift Current. 
Members immediately secured the scene and located three suspicious items in the middle of a parking lot, well away from any structures.
The Saskatchewan RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit attended to assist and as a precaution, destroyed the items at the scene. They are currently being examined. Additionally, Saskatchewan RCMP Police Dog Services attended and conducted a search. No additional suspicious items were located in the area.
The investigation into this incident has resulted in a 17 year old youth from Swift Current being charged with Possession of an explosive without lawful excuse - Section 82 of the Criminal Code and Possession of a weapon dangerous to the public -Section 88 of the Criminal Code.
The accused cannot be identified under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He has been held in custody and will appear in Provincial Court at 9:30 a.m. July 20 in Swift Current.
