The Swift Current SPCA hosts its 5th Annual John Mueller Memorial Radiothon to support the animal shelter’s operations on May 24 at the Square at Chaplin and Central.  This year’s goal is $25,000 – about one month’s budget for the organization.

“This is our biggest fundraising event of the year and we are always grateful for the business and individual support we receive,” notes new SPCA President Larry Johnson. The Radiothon will run from 9:30am-6:30pm and it will be broadcast live on Magic 97.1 radio. Pledges will be taken by phone at 306-778-SPCA (7722) and donations can be made on site at the event or online at http://spcaswiftcurrent.com/make-a-donation/. All donations of $10 or more are tax-receipted.

The day includes activities at the Square with live music, food, sparkle tattoos for the kids and SPCA books, raffle and merchandise on site. Shelter pets will be at the Square to visit with in the afternoon and a pet photographer will be available to take pet photos for the 2019 SPCA calendar for only $5 from 3-6pm. New this year is a caricature artist from Saskatoon who will be doing portraits (including owner and pet pictures) between noon and 5pm.

Johnson notes that the event depends on a number of businesses for volunteers. The hot dog barbeque lunch from 11-2pm is sponsored and staffed by Stark &Marsh CPA LLP and Innovation Credit Union will have a number of staff members helping with activities during the day. MNP staff will be running the donation table this year and sponsoring free coffee for all on-site donors.  The SPCA thanks premiere event sponsor Swift Current Building Supplies, platinum sponsors: Melhoff Electric, Wallace Construction, Winmar Property Restoration and Bridal Builders and numerous other business sponsors who have come on board for the event.

“We are a community-funded shelter, “ Johnson says.  “It’s awesome to see what the community and region can do for a cause like this when we all pitch in.”

The Swift Current SPCA is a local volunteer-directed registered charity which receives no provincial or federal funding, is not affiliated with nor funded by the Saskatchewan SPCA.  It serves 250-350 domestic pets (cats and dogs) annually, providing 24/7 – 365 day a year shelter, food, and care with a high standard of health safety. It also provides required medical services including a spay/neuter program, foster and adoption services, pound care and fee collection services for the City of Swift Current, and a lost and found registry and microchipping program to help reunite strays with owners. The SPCA has operated animal shelter services in Swift Current since 1973.
