Swift Current RCMP are still receiving an increased number of complaints regarding fraudulent phone calls from individual s claiming to be part of the Canada Revenue Agency.

The caller claims to be from the agency and that taxes are owed. Threatening or aggressive language is then used to frighten people into paying the fictitious debt. In some cases the caller threatened criminal charges, jail time, or deportation if the payment was not made. The caller has also been reported to ask for personal information from the potential victims. This includes social insurance number, credit card number, bank account number, or passport number. Any call using these tactics is fraudulent.

If you have lost money or provided personal information, this should be reported to your local RCMP Detachment immediately.

If however you were in receipt of such a phone call and recognize it as a scam, there is no need to contact your local RCMP. As well, please ignore any future phone calls from these individuals.

The public is reminded that if a call of this nature is received, contact the Phone Busters Fraud Line at 1-888-495-8501 . The Canada Revenue Agency can also be contacted to confirm the legitimacy of the phone call.

If you have information regarding this or any other crime, please contact Swift Current City RCMP at 306-778-4870 or if you have information and you wish to remain anonymous in your reporting, please contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), submit a tip via their website: http://saskcrimestoppers.com/ or text in a tip: TIP206 + your tip to CRIMES (274637).
