The Jean Norman Provincial Skating Competition is coming to Fairview Arenas in Swift Current March 2-4.

Over 250 skaters from across the province will be in attendance with skill levels ranging from Star 2 to Gold, competitive levels, Special Olympics and adult. Attendees can expect an exciting weekend filled with skating events like spin, jump, interpretive, dance, competitive, Free Skate and Special O. The Jean Norman Competition was last held in Swift Current in 2012.
Tanya Finlay, an Executive Member of the Swift Current Skating Club, is busy with preparations for this exciting event.
“It’s a big province-wide figure skating competition. There are about 250 skaters from all over Saskatchewan coming to it. It is all-levels from Star 2 to completive levels,” Finlay said. “It’s probably the Provinces largest competition in terms of numbers and it includes everyone. I think it’s important for the club because it draws attention to the sport and it might interest other people to come out and watch it and take an interest in figure skating. The skaters have been training hard all year and this is a chance for them to showcase their talent”.
Volunteers are the lifeblood of events and this year there is no shortage of willing and capable people helping out. They are passionate ambassadors for the skating club and are connected to this year’s cause and mission.
The Swift Current Skating Club has enthusiastic support from its members and make up part of the 10,000 volunteers that support skating across Canada.
“Every person involved with the club is volunteering. It takes a great number of volunteers to put this on so the entire club is volunteering. We have about 150 volunteers this year. From registration to ice captains to making food, there is a lot of prep that goes into it,” said Finlay.
With skating being one of the most popular sports in the world, Skate Canada is the largest figure skating organization in the world and is recognized by the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) as the governing body for the sport of figure skating in Canada. Dedicated to creating a “nation of skaters” both recreationally and competitively, a vast selection of programs is offered. The Swift Current skating club is just one in over 1200 skating clubs across the country developing the sport of skating.
Swift Current Skating Club is looking forward to the event as well as welcoming skaters from across the province to our city. Don’t miss this exciting event coming to Swift Current this weekend.
