Saskatchewan New Democratic Party (NDP) leadership candidate Ryan Meili attended a meet and greet event in Swift Current on Jan. 8 to talk about his vision for the province.

He believes the NDP needs to have bold ideas and a clear vision to be successful in the next provincial election. He spoke about seven key aspects of his vision for Saskatchewan, which includes goals for diversified economic growth that will benefit everyone, a focus on the needs of rural communities, and taking steps to develop Saskatchewan's renewable energy resources and to establish the province as an energy leader for the 21st century.

He wants to achieve real reconciliation by closing the gap in health, education and economic outcomes between indigenous and non-indigenous people in the province. He also spoke about the need to address the social determinants of health as a key part of providing complete health care to provincial residents.

Meili previously worked as a family doctor and he is currently the MLA for Saskatoon Meewasin.

He won this seat during a by-election in March 2017. Meili and Regina Rosemont MLA Trent Wotherspoon are contesting the party leadership. Party members will elect the next leader of the Saskatchewan NDP at a leadership convention in Regina, March 3.
