It’s Christmas time in the city and people are bustling about trying to get that last-minute shopping done.

The Swift Current Band Parents Auxiliary are trying to help the best they can, wrapping presents in the Swift Current Mall just outside of Safeway until Dec. 24.
All proceeds will be donated to local band students. What better way to get on Santa’s nice list by supporting Swift Current’s music students?
Natasha Prefontaine and Terri Potter of Swift Current were busy wrapping gifts for Swift Current Mall patrons Dec. 14.  Both said they were happy to take part in the fundraiser. On opening night, they wrapped each gift with care and a warm smile.
They are sure to be on Santa’s Nice List for volunteering for the Swift Current Band Parents Auxiliary and spending a few hours of their time supporting an annual fundraiser. The Swift Current Band Parents Auxiliary have been wrapping presents in local malls to raise money for band trips for almost twenty years.
The non-profit organization, though the exact date is uncertain, has been putting smiles on band students faces since 1998. Though it’s not their biggest fundraiser, it gives them the opportunity to be visible to the public and provide a gift-wrapping service to the community.
“The Mall really likes that we are here. Any of the merchants can send their customers over here and they can get their gifts wrapped. The fee is only $1 per paper foot used,” Caroline Barrington said. “It’s a fun fundraiser to do. We have the bottle drive and fruit and cookie dough fundraisers as well.”
Caroline Barrington, a local parent, has taken on the role of Gift Wrap Task Leader.
Having a son at Centennial School who is in Grade 7 and in band, Barrington plans to volunteer for the Band Parents Auxiliary right up until her son is in Grade 12.
Parents can earn Music Miles that can be applied against the costs of band trips by volunteering and lending a helping hand.
They have volunteers, who are all parents of members of the band programs in all the Swift Current schools from Grade 6 to 12.
“We are wrapping up people’s presents to raise money for the auxiliary. All the funds from fundraisers such as these are pooled together and awarded back to the parents in music miles. Parents come out and wrap presents for a shift which is about three hours and they will earn two music miles for that,” Barrington explained with a smile. “Sometimes, we have the children doing some of their own fundraising. The trip they go on at the end of the year is quite expensive, so all of the music miles are applied back to all the expenses of trips.
“We hope lots of people can come down and support our event. We have lots of supplies and expert wrappers on hand.”
Dec. 14 marked the opening of the gift-wrapping station. The Swift Current Band Parents Auxiliary Gift-Wrapping Fundraiser will be open to wrap gifts up until Christmas Eve. If you would like more information, please go to their website at
