Fatal aircraft crash near Swift Current

A small, single engine aircraft crashed shortly after taking off from the Swift Current Airport on Thursday night, Aug. 24.

According to a RCMP media release, the Swift Current Rural RCMP responded at approximately 7:30 p.m. to a report of a small aircraft that had crashed just southeast of the airport.

“Upon arrival, RCMP and Emergency Services located a downed, fixed-wing aircraft,” the RCMP noted in the media statement. “The two occupants were pronounced deceased at the scene.”

The RCMP has no further details available at this time. More information will be provided at it becomes available.

The incident is currently under investigation by the RCMP and Transport Canada.

According to information from Transport Canada's Civil Aviation Daily Occurrence Reporting System (CADORS), the privately registered American Aviation AA-5 aircraft was on a flight from Nelson, B.C., to Regina, Saskatchewan.

City of Swift Current Communications and Stakeholder Relations Coordinator Michael Boutilier said the aircraft landed at the Swift Current Airport at 6:23 p.m. and took off on 7:04 p.m.

The City of Swift Current released the following statement on Friday morning:

Following the fatal aircraft incident that took place last night near Swift Current Airport, the City of Swift Current wishes to make the following statement:

“The small, single engine aircraft that tragically crashed approximately half a mile from the Swift Current Airport last night shortly after 7:00 p.m. had taken off from the Airport immediately prior to the incident,” stated Michael Boutilier, Communications & Stakeholder Relations Coordinator for the City of Swift Current.

“Currently, a Transportation Safety Board investigation team is en route to the crash site, which has been secured and is being protected by the RCMP. The cause of the incident will be determined through the Transportation Safety Board’s investigation. The City would like to express our sincere condolences to the family/families of the individuals who were killed in the crash. We will have no further comment on this incident.”
