Health Sciences Association of Saskatchewan's province-wide striking tour came to Swift Current May 13.

Over 100 specialized health-care professionals from the Cypress Health Region — including addictions counsellors, dieticians, health educators, psychologists, social workers and speech-language pathologists — picketed outside the E. I. Wood Building to raise awareness about the understaffing and discrepancy in wages they are facing.

"Health care employers … are constantly refusing to call in back up staff when regular therapists are ill or on extended leave. In addition, when an overtime position becomes vacant, employers will wait months to fill it. They call this ‘vacancy management’, and it is little more than an effort by health care managers to balance their budgets at the expense of patients and professionals,” Cathy Dickson, HSAS's president said.

HSAS has been holding strikes in one city per day, moving it around each day. Dickson said the union will continue with that strategy, but it will not reveal where the next strike will be held.
