The 2019 Western Canada Summer Games will be hosting its second test event, a triathlon, on Sunday, August 5, at the Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park. Races start at 8 a.m. at Cottonwood Beach (otherwise known as Main Beach) and include Sprint, Super Sprint, Try-a-Tri and Kids of Steel Aquathlon events. As a result, Highway 261 will be closed from 7:30 a.m. until approximately 11 a.m.

“We run test events in order help ensure that we will be prepared for the real thing next summer,” says Games manager, Denise Barbier. “It’s a fun, proactive approach for checking the routes and identifying any potential issues that may come up.”

Triathlon enthusiasts around the prairie provinces have registered for the Sprint, which is a 750 m swim, a 21.3 km bike ride and 5 km run, and the Super Sprint, which includes a 500 m swim, 12.4 km bike ride and a 3 km run.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for current triathletes and individuals that are new to the sport,” says Chris Gdanski, executive director of Triathlon Saskatchewan. “We even have an event for younger kids.”

The Try-a-Tri event, which is a 250 m swim, 4.6 km bike ride and 2 km run, is meant for the more unexperienced athlete that is wanting to try the sport and the Kids of Steel Aquathlon, contains a swim and run for children 12 and under.

Volunteers for the Saskatchewan Landing Triathlon are still required. “We are expecting over 50 participants and with that, volunteers are needed,” explains Games volunteer, Stephanie Prpick Boss. “If anyone is interested in helping out, there are definitely opportunities available. Also, if someone wants to sign up for an event at the triathlon, we are still taking registrations up to August 4.”

The Saskatchewan Landing Triathlon is generously sponsored and supported by Carefree Adventures, SaskTriathlon, Amphibious Response Support Unit One and many volunteers, in partnership with Prpick Boss Enterprises, Triathlon Saskatchewan and the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games.
