By Elizabeth Huber Saskatchewan An alleged fuel thief took a wrong turn attempting to lead police on a chase through Swift Current which ended after the car he was driving tipped on its side. At nearly 4 a.m. on Monday morning when the streets would be nearly empty of other drivers, the RCMP received a call reporting a fuel theft from a station on the North Service Road. Police located the suspected vehicle on the opposite service road. According RCMP, when they attempted to stop the car it crossed George Street heading south down First Avenue North East which is cut off by a park. The driver of the vehicle then chose to turn right finding himself at a dead end. He almost stopped then decided to try to take the walking path with his car, described Sergeant Pat Laybolt. Unfortunately for the driver, there were posts in the way. As he attempted to take the path, the car “gently” and “at slow speed, tipped on its side.” The incident falls under the RCMP’s definition of a pursuit, explained Laybolt, adding the chase didn’t have opportunity to reach high speeds, since it lasted for approximately three blocks. When the car tipped the male and female were taken into police custody and treated for “very minor” injuries resulting from a broken window. The 19-year-old driver of the vehicle, Brandon Lavorato-Doran, has been held in police custody and made his first court appearance Monday afternoon. Allegations against him include dangerous driving, failing to stop and theft of fuel. On Wednesday, after pleading guilty to the charges he received a six-month jail sentence consisting of four months for the dangerous driving, two months for failing to stop for police and one month concurrent for the fuel theft. A one-year probation order follows the jail sentence. It includes an order to abstain from drugs and alcohol and submit to breath and urine testing. There was some alcohol involved at the time of the incident, but no charges arose as a result, said Laybolt. |
