Round 1 of the PING CCAA Golf National Championship is in the books, and Connor O’Dell and Sonia Nagindas have moved to the top of the individual standings. There are also Medicine Hat College Rattlers in the hunt.

O’Dell, a member of the tournament host University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, looked supremely confident at Chilliwack Golf Club on Wednesday. The fourth-year golfer from Maple Ridge, B.C. registered seven birdies en route to a five-under 67.

O’Dell’s strong start affords him a two-stroke margin atop the individual men’s leaderboard heading into the second of three rounds on Thursday. Tied for second place are Stephen Brown of the Lambton College Lions and Mark Wikkerink of the Niagara College Knights, who shot matching rounds of 69.

Wikkerink’s Niagara Knights lead the team standings, combining for a total of 284 (four under par). That leaves them three strokes up on the host Cascades (287) and five up on the defending champion Holland College Hurricanes (289).

Medicine Hat's Mitchelle Kurtz is eight over with an 80 (63rd) while Jesse Florkowski  is 10 over with an 82.

On the women’s side, Nagindas – a Humber College Hawks rookie from Aurora, Ont. – fired an opening-round 76 to claim a three-stroke lead on a trio of pursuers: her Humber teammate Sheila McKeen, Emilie Tyndall of the Georgian College Grizzlies, and Carolyn Lee of the UBC Okanagan Heat. Defending champion Lorelle Weavers of the Niagara Knights opened with an 84 and is in 11th place.

Rattlers' Danielle Blackmer is 13th overall with a 14 over 86 and Taylor Hallas is 32 over with a 104.

With Nagindas and McKeen leading the way, the Hawks posted a combined score of 155 (+11) to take a four-stroke lead over the Georgian Grizzlies (159). UBC Okanagan (162) is seven strokes back in third place. The defending champion Champlain St. Lawrence Lions (173) sit fifth.

Thursday’s second round begins at 8:30 a.m. Pacific time.
