Receiving a full scholarship made all the difference in the world to a worthy applicant: Medicine Hat College power engineering student Challis Elkink.

Because of the donation by CF Industries, Elkink can focus on a promising career in engineering when otherwise it would have made it extremely difficult.
The unfortunate thing is that there are many potentially worthy recipients who don’t apply for whatever reason.
Those looking to find ways to help fund their post secondary education at the Medicine Hat College should pay attention: an important deadline is approaching.
Connie Cash, who works with the college’s scholarships, bursaries and loans department in the college’s student financial aid office, reminds those interested that online scholarship and bursary applications open March 17 and close May 15.
“Our scholarship database is open,” explains Cash. “Those interested only have to complete one application and then that (one application) will |apply and be good for all scholarships.”
Cash says there are about 300-320 different awards available and within some of those they are anywhere from 1-15 recipients per award.
“Every year, we do see our number of applicants go up,” explains Cash, but says more should apply for the more than $350,000 which is available.
She adds a committee checks the criteria of the applicants and makes the judgement of worthy recipients.
According to the college: scholarships are based on academic standing; bursaries are awarded according to financial need, while some awards are a combination of both academics and financial need.
Those interested can check out the college’s website and learn more at: Services/PlanYourEducation/FinancialAid/Scholarships%20and%20Bursaries/AdditionalScholarships.aspx.
