An unfortunate accident at Writing on Stone Provincial Park July 21 has sent one woman via STARS Air Ambulance to Foothills Hospital in Calgary.

On Saturday, Milk River RCMP attended the scene of a serious accident.  A 57-year-old female from Medicine Hat was involved in a trail ride in Police Coulee, just south of Writing on Stone Provincial Park.

The horse the female was riding lost it’s footing and both the animal as well as the female fell approximately 50-75 feet to the bottom of the coulee.

The horse recovered but the female sustained severe head injuries in the fall.

Fire and Rescue units from both the Town of Milk River and the Village of Coutts, EMS and responding RCMP Members were required to extract the female a distance of over 500 feet to the top of the coulee.  Awaiting STARS Air Ambulance then transported her to Foothills Hospital in Calgary, where she remains in critical condition.

Milk River RCMP continue to investigate. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
