A joint effort by two southeastern Alberta communities to maintain an accessible health workforce close to home is being honoured.

Joint Services Committee, representing both the City of Brooks and the County of Newell, has been selected as the recipient of the 2017 RhPAP Alberta Rural Community Physician Attraction and Retention Award. The Rural Community Award, presented annually, is co-sponsored by the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association (AWNA), and the Rural Health Professions Action Plan (RhPAP).
Joint Services Committee was selected to receive the honour by a review committee composed of rural Alberta community members and medical professionals. According to RhPAP Executive Director, Bernard Anderson, the committee felt that Joint Services efforts to restore obstetrics services to Brooks, and the ongoing regional approach towards workforce attraction and retention, makes it a model for other communities to emulate.
“The community overcame challenges of complexity and distance and created a team based care program, linking in the County and neighboring communities, and includes things like ESL to insure effective communication between patients and providers,” explains Anderson.
The 2017 Rural Community Award will be presented to the Joint Services Committee at the RhPAP 2018 Community Conference, taking place in Brooks on Apr. 10-12, 2018. Visit for more details.
The Alberta Rural Community Physician Attraction and Retention Award was created in 2007 to recognize rural Alberta communities that have best developed innovative and collaborative approaches resulting in successful physician attraction and retention. This community engagement work is an integral part of RhPAP’s comprehensive and integrated attraction and retention programming.
The Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association (AWNA) is the co-sponsor of the 2017 Alberta Rural Community Physician Attraction and Retention Award. The AWNA assists and ensures its members publish high quality community newspapers. The Association achieves this by prioritizing education, marketing and fellowship.
Founded in 1991 by the Government of Alberta as the Alberta Rural Physician Action Plan, a renewed Rural Health Professions Action Plan, or RhPAP, is transitioning from a rural physician support program to a rural allied health professionals and community development agency. Our vision is to help rural Alberta have and sustain the right number of rural health practitioners in the right places, offering the right services, through community and professional development programs, services, and evidence-informed advocacy. We are grateful to Alberta Health for its continued financial support.
