Conner Jean (Oakland, MI) had two goals and an assist, as the Brooks Bandits (13-4-1) recorded their fifth consecutive win on Saturday night, beating the visiting Drumheller Dragons (10-7-1) by a 5-2 score in front of an announced crowd of 1,307 at the Centennial Regional Arena.

The win gives the Bandits a six point lead over Drumheller for second place in the AJHL South, though the team remains 3 points back of first place Okotoks with the Oilers holding two games in hand.

Already short staffed when the home-and-home series began Friday night, the Dragons were down to just 9 regular forwards and 4 regular defencemen after losing leading scorer Jordan Taupert, forward Dawson Bruneski, and defenceman Josh Bishop for Saturday night’s game.

The Bandits ended up playing one of the team’s most dominant first periods of the entire season, outshooting the visitors 15-6 and converting twice; the first a Jean rebound goal at 7:25, and the second a power play backdoor tap in by Cale List (Petawawa, ON) at the 14:30 mark to make it a 2-0 game.

In the second, Simon Boyko (Mississauga, ON) made it 3-0 when he fired a wrist shot from the right circle past goalie Dane Dow.

Jean got his second of the game on a backhander from the slot 9:56 into the third on a setup from the end wall by rookie Liam Lytton (Vancouver, B.C.). But Drumheller spoiled the shutout bid for goalie Mitch Benson (Windsor, ON) when Carson Kurylo scored from the right circle at 11:43 to make it 4-1.

But just over three minutes later, Brandon Scanlin (Hamilton, ON) tapped in a power play rebound goal for a 5-1 Bandit lead. A late five-on-three man advantage gave Drumheller its second goal on a left circle shot by Markus Boguslavsky, but it was too little too late as the Bandits held on for their tenth consecutive game without a regulation loss.

Brooks outshot the Dragons 42-25 in the game, going 2 for 7 on the power play and 7 for 8 on the penalty kill. Benson stopped 23 of 25 for the win while Dow took the loss stopping 37.

The Bandits play a second consecutive home game on Friday night when they welcome the Camrose Kodiaks to the CRA for the first time this season. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM with tickets available online at
