Alberta Health Services (AHS) is postponing at least 18 elective surgeries that had been scheduled to take place at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital (MHRH) tomorrow, Thursday, May 11. These postponements are due to the water quality concern that is impacting our ability to sterilize/reprocess medical devices at this site, and are in addition to the 62 postponements that took place on May 9 and May 10.

The postponement of these elective surgeries has and will continue to allow us to maintain our supply of devices for emergency surgeries at this facility, while we continue to investigate the water quality concern and address the issue.

We know this is inconvenient and potentially stressful for the affected patients and we apologize for that. Decisions are made with patients first in mind. Affected patients are being advised of surgery postponements by AHS, and we are working toward a normal surgical schedule as quickly as possible. Patients will be contacted again by their surgeon’s office to reschedule procedures as soon as possible.

As we do not yet know the root cause of this issue, we are not yet able to anticipate the duration of impact on elective surgeries or procedures beyond tomorrow. We do know that there has been no impact on inpatient, urgent and emergency care, and water serving patients and staff is safe.

Our most immediate concern is, as always, the safety and well-being of patients, staff and visitors.

Affected patients, or patients who are uncertain if their surgery is impacted or concerned about this issue, can call Site Administration at 403-502-8648 (ext. 1509) during regular business hours, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

After hours, patients can contact MHRH switchboard at 403-529-8000 and calls will be returned the following morning.
